Frequently asked questions
In order to be a commercial pilot in India, the cadet must be in possession of a valid Class 1 medical licesnce. To obtain this, one must first obtain a valid Class 2 medical license first.
You must seek an appointment from DGCA verified medical centres, the list of which is available on their website.
The Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical) or RTR-A license is one which allows a trainee to operate and commnicate using radio equipment onboard an aircraft. It is required to obtain a CPL and is held in 5 locations across India; Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai four times a year.
The exam is conducted in two parts; Part 1 is a written and transmission based assessment while Part 2 is a viva exam.
Trainees who have completed their flight training in a commonwealth country (like Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc), are required to to only clear Part 1 to convert their foreign CPL to an Indian CPL.

You must clear the 3 CPL papers Air Navigation, Meteorology and Air regulations with the additional requirement of a valid RTR-A license. One may also opt for the Nav-composite exam, which a single exam entailing meteorology and navigation, instead of clearing both separately.
For those who have completed flight training in a commonwealth country, they are required to only clear Part 1 of the RTR exam.
An Airline Transport Pilot License or ATPL license is one which allows a valid CPL holder to be eligible for upgrade to Command/Captain once they have flown a minimum of 1500 hours on their specific aircraft. The exam is based on the CPL subjects' syllabus.
Please note that having flown 1500 hours doesn't gurantee an upgrade to Captain, but only makes one eligible for the upgrade. In actual practice, you will neeed at least about 3000 hours minimum to even be considered for an upgrade, varying from airline to airline.
